It was recognised that as part of Tornado’s overhaul, the driving wheels would require new tyres, the first new set since the engine steamed in 2008. Since then, the wheels have covered over 130,000 miles, showing the extent to which the metal versions have a much greater lifespan than the average car’s rubber tyres!
Following their time at South Devon Railway (Engineering), the freshly re-tyred wheels were delivered back to LMS to be reunited with Tornado’s frames. Although a little later than originally anticipated, the arrival of the refurbished components at LMS is a welcome sight! They will now be re-painted and lined before fitting.
