It is recognised that steam locomotives, like teenagers, are expensive creatures and so it follows that Tornado is no different! Now in her 13th year in steam, Tornado is in for an intermediate overhaul. To help fund this engineering work, we have launched ‘The Overhaul Club’ to raise a target of £50,000 to supplement the capital already set aside. Donations to this Club will compensate for the interruption to our expected earnings caused by the pandemic, and early withdrawal from service. We invite supporters to donate either £500 or £1,000 as a lump sum, or in instalments, by completing the form below.

The Overhaul Club Day

All Overhaul Club members are invited to an exclusive visit to see Tornado at the LMS workshop on Saturday 21st May. Sign up to the club by 10th May to join Director of Engineering, Ben McDonald, for a walk around the stripped down locomotive with LMS owner David Wright. Guests will receive a full update of work undertaken through this overhaul, and have plenty of opportunity to ask any questions. The visit to LMS is followed by lunch on the Great Central Railway.

The Scope of Work

Work to be done includes:

  • Boiler work
  • New tyres for driving wheels and the tender
  • Machining and fitting of new cylinder liners
  • Preparation for fitment of European Train Control System
  • Plus many other component overhaul, repairs and replacement.

For more detail and updates, read more here.

At odds with other guardians of teenagers, we will be delighted to see it smoking at the back of the shed at the end of the day!
