“A new A1 for the price of a pint !”
This was our concept when we began building the new A1 Pacific Tornado in 1990. Supporters could covenant (donate) just the monthly equivalent of the price of a pint of beer per week. In those days beer cost £1.25 a pint in the Northeast.
Much of the locomotive as you see it today has been funded by this means – a lot of people contributing a small amount on a regular basis. They provided most of the funds which put Tornado onto the main line.
Covenants disappeared at the beginning of the century but were replaced with a procedure called Gift Aid. As a registered charity, this enables the Trust to claim back, from HM Customs & Revenue, the income/capital gains tax that you have paid on your donations. For example for every £10.00 that you donate, the Trust could claim an additional £2.50, making your contribution worth £12.50.
Although Deeds of Covenant no longer exist all our regular contributors are, for historical reasons, referred to as “Covenantors”.
Please come on board and help speed Tornado in her main line career with a Monthly Donation…
A monthly payment made (on the 10th of each month) by standing order in units of £10 – may also be paid annually. In recognition of their support, monthly covenantors receive:
- A print of Tornado
- Access to view Tornado at all reasonable times
- The Trust’s journal and newsletters on a regular basis
- The opportunity to attend the Trust’s Annual Convention
- The opportunity to attend days out to other railway centres
- Priority travel on A1 Trust trains hauled by Tornado
